A time travel always changes the present. When a group of archeologists go back in the year 1357 on a rescue mission they find themselves in the middle of a war between the English and the French troops. They try to return to the present safely altogether.
In the heart of the beautiful and historically rich Dordogne Valley of France, a team of archeology students and their professor diligently work to uncover the ruins of a 14th-century castle. For Professor Edward Johnston, the project is the culmination of a lifelong dream. Aided by assistant professor Andre Marek, his son Chris and students Kate, Stern and François, Johnston has made major strides in unearthing not only La Roque Castle but also a monastery and structures from the surrounding village of Castlegard. But things are about to go haywire… Suspicious of the dig's benefactor, International Technology Corporation (ITC) and the man who runs it, Robert Doniger, Professor Johnston heads to ITC headquarters in New Mexico to get some answers, and while he's away, his students discover a chamber that has been sealed for more than 600 years. Marek and Kate descend into the unstable room, and just before a near disastrous cave-in, they make two startling discoveries – a bifocal lens, which couldn't have been invented before the chamber was sealed, and even more intriguing, a handwritten plea for help dated April 2, 1357…from Professor Johnston! Determined to solve the mystery, the students head for ITC headquarters, where they are stunned to learn of Doniger's new invention – a machine that can actually transmit three-dimensional objects through space. Although he meant for the device to revolutionize shipping, Doniger inadvertently opened a wormhole that leads directly to the 14th century, and Professor Johnston, who had insisted on experiencing the discovery himself, is now trapped in a vicious French vs. English feudal war! Can Johnston's loyal students survive one of the most violent battles in world history… and make it back to the 21st century alive?
Warning: spoilers follow.

By itself, this movie would be another average adventure movie (don't let the time travel element fool you; about 30 seconds of the movie actually has to do with time travel). However, since it's based on the brilliant novel by Michael Crichton, it has a higher standard to live up to, and fails miserably. Crichton's book develops a rich story involving the world of 1357, the development of the time travel technology (which isn't actually time travel; see below), and the backstories of the diverse characters involved. This movie instead presents a 14th Century where people speak modern English and French (huh?), a bizarre story involving a locked wormhole, and basic cardboard characters. One of the book's most interesting aspects that has been cut out of the movie involves the time travel technology itself. In the movie, ITC has found a wormhole that links back to Castelgard, France on April 2nd, 1357. It's a pretty basic device to speed the movie along. However, the novel details that the technology actually destroys the user and instantly recreates them in an alternate universe that happens to be in a different time. Thus, ITC can send people to any place or any time in history, not just 1357 France. The novel also develops a rich interplay between the main characters. Chris and Kate aren't set up to be a couple until the very end of the story, instead of just after they arrive as the movie shows. Andre Marek's character suffers worst in the movie; his novel version gives much more reason to why he wants to stay in the 14th Century and more insight to his studies. Finally, Crichton's novel goes to extreme lengths to detail the world of 1357. It's not just about the clothing or the language (which is not even close to modern dialect; another multilation by the movie.) It's an entirely different world. England and France as we know them do not exist; the fight over La Roque and Castelgard is between two warlords, not entire nations. Our heroes cannot simply fight their ancestral counterparts toe to toe; the people of the 14th Century, while short-lived and superstitious, were much stronger than modern humans. The novel characters are fitted with custom earpieces to translate the local language for them, though they cannot speak it very well, if at all. The movie also leaves out several interesting and important plot lines from the novel, including a jousting tournament, Chris running afoul of Lord Oliver, and a climatic confrontation between Oliver and Arnaut in La Roque's dungeon. In addition, the plots of De Kere and transcription errors are also fully explained instead of petering out. So, in conclusion, Timeline is another cookie cutter popcorn adventure movie. It's mildly entertaining, but if you'd like to find out what this movie could have been, read Crichton's novel.
I am nearly done the book and so looked forward to seeing it on film so I started watching the movie.

I was so thoroughly disappointed, disheartened and dismayed by the first 26 minutes I had to stop.

I was becoming more and more upset by what the producers and writers had done to a great Crichton story with each passing minute. I am *aghast* at what they did to the story, leading me to wonder if they'd read the book at all.

Normally you can't go wrong with a movie made from a Crichton book, some could be better that's true, but generally it's a Crichton movie. But not this time.

Save yourself the great disappointment and upset, DO NOT BUY OR WATCH THIS MOVIE.

If you're keen on time travel movies I suggest "Primer" or "Time Lapse."
Special kudos go to Walker, for his dead-on impression of a time-traveling 2x4, and the perpetually hysterical O'Connor, who delivers one of the most grating performances in history.
There are 10 people who traveled in time; this is what happened to each of them:

Chris, Kate & Chris' father, prof. Johnston all make it back to 2003 safely.

Frank Gordon: Gets a sword in the chest from De Kere and is left for dead when he is cut loose from the wagon.

François: Gets killed by one of Lord Olliver's aides-de-camps; also via a sword in the chest (They think he's a spy sent by Lord Arnaud).

Gomez: Gets too many arrows in his chest from an English archer as soon as the group gets to 1357. He is left for dead.

Baretta: Blows himself up with his own grenade as he hits his marker, thus he dies in 2003 (He also blows up the time machine).

Decker/De Kere: Dies in the battle of La Roque when the French army attack the castle.

André Marek: Chooses to remain in 1357 and get married to Claire.

Doniger: Steps into the time machine as Chris, Kate & Prof Johnston are coming back to the present. He gets his neck slashed by a knight's sword as soon as he gets to 1357.

This is a typical example of how a movie should be plotted with a very extraordinary story. I really love the way these movies are taken from the start to the end. From its screening itself, we can understand that the back crew had a lot of hard work for making it a success. cbd products
